The Greater Cedar Rapids Open Board of Directors announces that there will not be an event played in 2025
(Cedar Rapids, IA) – After 25 unforgettable years, the Board of Directors of the Greater Cedar Rapids Open (GCRO) has made the difficult decision not to host the event in 2025. This marks the close of a cherished chapter in our community’s golfing history, one filled with competition, camaraderie, and a shared commitment to giving back.
Since its founding in 1999, the GCRO has welcomed thousands of Professional, Amateur, and Junior golfers to the greens of Hunters Ridge Golf Course. It became more than just a tournament – it became a summer tradition that inspired generations. Among its alumni is PGA Tour champion and Cedar Rapids native Zach Johnson, who captured the GCRO title in 2001 before going on to win the 2007 Masters and the 2015 Open Championship, along with 10 other PGA titles.
Yet the legacy of the GCRO stretches far beyond the fairways. Thanks to the generosity of donors and the dedication of volunteers, the tournament proudly contributed over $250,000 to local youth and veteran organizations. These gifts have left a lasting impact on lives throughout Linn County and beyond.
We extend heartfelt gratitude to our steadfast sponsors, especially TrueNorth Companies and UFG Insurance, whose loyalty and belief in our mission never wavered. We’re also deeply thankful to the owners of Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion for hosting us year after year, and to Director of Golf Nate Severin and his incredible team for creating a welcoming home for this event.
To the countless volunteers, donors, golfers, and fans who have been part of this journey, thank you. Your support made every swing, every putt, and every summer count.
As we turn the page, we hold close the belief that has guided us from the beginning:
“Golf is a lesson in life and a game for a lifetime.”
So while the tournament may come to an end, the spirit of the GCRO lives on in every round played, every young golfer inspired, and every life touched along the way. Keep playing. Keep giving. Keep growing.
