Preparations for the 2021 TrueNorth Greater Cedar Rapids Open, presented by UFG Insurance, are well underway.
The GCRO, which was cancelled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, will make its return Tuesday, July 20 through Saturday, July 24 at beautiful Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion.
In order to make the 22nd edition of the 54-hole professional golf tournament a continued success, we are looking for volunteers from around the area to donate a few hours of their time. The lifeblood of the tournament, along with our donors and sponsors, volunteers are needed in many areas and you do not need to be familiar with the game of golf to be a big help.
We need as many volunteers as possible, so if you can step forward and give us 4-5 hours of your valuable time that would be greatly appreciated.
We would like to invite those who have already committed to helping as well as those prospective volunteers to a quick meeting from 5-6 p.m. this Thursday, June 10 at Hunters Ridge Lodge. Tournament co-founder and co-chairman Jim McPartland promises the meeting will be quick and casual. Please join us if you can. Volunteer sign-up sheets will also be available.
The GCRO, considered among the top mini-tour events in the country, provides a showcase for aspiring professional golfers from around the world. The tournament also promotes the game of golf as a “lesson in life” and a “game for a lifetime” and highlights the hospitality and cooperation of the community.
As well, the GCRO has made it a mission to give back to the community. Since its inception in 1999, the tournament has donated over $225,000, benefitting many recreational opportunities for local youth and veterans.
All volunteers will earn a free GCRO golf shirt for helping out. Volunteers will also be served a bag lunch for each shift they work. If you can work a couple days, we’d love to have you. We are also looking for caddies, who are paid for their work.
Again, you do not need to be familiar with the rules of golf to help out. We have administrative and other spots available for you to help. For a complete list of possible volunteering options, go to our website (www.gcropen.com) or click here. You can also email us at gcropen@gmail.com.
